What we move
If it is furniture, an appliance or a bulky one off, it is probably on this list. If it is not, ask anyway. The awkward items are the ones people most often assume nobody will take.
Sofas and corner suites
The most common single item we move and the one most likely to cause trouble. Corner suites often come apart into two or three sections, and knowing which ones do is half the job.
Beds and mattresses
Divans, frames and mattresses, dismantled where they come apart. Mattresses travel covered rather than bare, because a stair wall marks a mattress permanently.
Wardrobes and flat-pack
Solid wardrobes are the classic tenement problem: too tall for the turn and too heavy to angle. Flat-pack items are usually better dismantled, and we will say so upfront.

How we protect a single item
The difference between a furniture removal and two people with a van is almost entirely in what happens before the item moves. A sofa that gets blanket wrapped in the living room arrives in the same condition it left. A sofa that gets carried out bare picks up every door frame and close wall on the way.
Upholstery goes under blankets and covers. Polished and veneered surfaces get wrapped rather than stacked against each other. Corners, which are what catch on door frames, get separate protection. Glass, mirrors and cabinet doors are wrapped and carried on their own rather than left attached to whatever they came in.
Your property gets the same treatment. Floor runners where we are carrying across carpet, protection on door frames, and in a tenement that means the shared close as well as your own hallway. Glasgow access, and why it decides the job
On a whole house move access affects the price. On a single item it decides whether the job is possible at all. A three seat sofa that fits comfortably in a ground floor terrace may genuinely not go up a West End tenement stair, and that is worth knowing before you buy it rather than after we arrive.
The usual obstacles are the same across the city. Tenement closes with a half landing and a tight turn at the top, where the limiting measurement is not the doorway but the diagonal across the turn. Older buildings with no lift above the ground floor. New build developments where there is a service lift but it has to be booked. Narrow lanes behind terraces where a Luton simply will not go.
Then there is the street itself. Much of the West End, the city centre and the inner Southside is permit controlled, and where a suspension is needed we arrange it rather than gambling on a space being free. City centre collections need planning around the Low Emission Zone and enforced loading restrictions.
None of this is a problem when it is known in advance. Tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and roughly how tight the stair is when you ask for a price, and we will tell you honestly whether the item is going to make it.

Number and size of items
One armchair and a full room of furniture are different jobs. Volume decides whether it is a quick run or most of an afternoon, and whether two people can handle it or it needs three.
Floor level and access at both ends
The single biggest factor on furniture work. Ground floor to ground floor is straightforward. Third floor tenement with a turn at the top, at both ends, is a genuinely different job.
Distance between addresses
Across a couple of postcodes is quick. Across the city at rush hour, or a collection out in Lanarkshire with a delivery in the West End, takes considerably longer.
Dismantling and reassembly
Beds, tables and detachable sofa sections take time at both ends. Often it is the difference between the item fitting and not fitting, so it is time well spent rather than an upsell.
Timing
Weekday daytime slots are the easiest to staff and usually the best value. Evenings, weekends and same week bookings are tighter, particularly around month ends.
Dedicated or shared journey
A job that needs the van to itself is priced differently from one that can travel alongside another booking. Ask about both when you enquire, because the flexible option is often cheaper.

Will it fit? A measuring guide
The single most common problem in furniture removals is an item that cannot physically get where it is going. Five minutes with a tape measure before you buy saves a great deal of trouble afterwards, so this is worth reading even if you never book us.
Measure the item first, all three ways
Height, width and depth, and for a sofa also the diagonal across the back corner to the front edge. That diagonal is what actually determines whether it turns through a doorway, and it is the measurement almost everyone forgets.
Measure the narrowest doorway, not the widest
The limiting doorway is usually not the front door. It is the internal one at the top of the stair, or the living room door that opens against a wall. Measure the frame itself with the door open, not the opening in the wall.
Measure the stair turn, not just the stair
On a tenement stair the problem is almost never the flight. It is the half landing, where you need the diagonal from the inside corner to the outside wall. If that number is smaller than your item diagonal, it is not going up.
Check the lift, including the ceiling
New build developments usually have a service lift, but the internal depth is often shorter than people assume and some have a hatch in the ceiling that lets tall items stand at an angle. Worth checking before you assume the lift solves it.
Take the door off if you need to
A standard internal door and its hinges give back around 40mm, which is frequently the difference. We can lift doors off and rehang them, so mention it rather than writing the item off.
Know what comes apart
Corner suites often split into sections, sofa legs usually unscrew, bed frames come apart entirely and table tops lift off. A sofa that will not fit assembled very often fits in two pieces.
If it truly will not fit
Some items simply will not go, and it is better to know before money changes hands. A window lift by a specialist is occasionally possible, otherwise it is a case of choosing a different item. Ask us before you buy and we will give you a straight answer.
