Contractually, the inventory does the work. Everything is listed and its condition recorded before it goes in, and checked off again when it comes out, so there is never an argument about what was there or what state it was in. Short term or long term storage
The two are priced differently and prepared differently, so it is worth being clear at the outset which one you are likely to need. If you are not sure, assume short and extend. Nobody is penalised for a chain that slips.
Short term storage
Days to a couple of months, and almost always driven by dates rather than choice. A chain that slipped, a completion date that moved, a renovation that overran, a rental that ended before the purchase completed.
Short term storage is priced by the week and by volume. A one bed flat for a fortnight is a genuinely small cost against the alternative of a hotel with all your furniture in a van outside. Because we expect these dates to move, extending is a phone call and there is no penalty for it. The most common short term booking we handle is a week to ten days across a delayed entry date.
Long term storage
Three months to several years, and usually a deliberate decision. Working abroad, travelling, renting somewhere furnished, holding a family home contents after a bereavement, or simply owning more furniture than the current place can take.
Long term is priced by the month and works out considerably cheaper per week than short term. It is also where preparation matters most: anything going in for a year wants proper covers, no damp, and nothing perishable left in a drawer. What shapes a combined removals and storage quote
A combined quote has two parts: the moving legs at each end, and the storage in between. The move side is priced as any house move would be. The storage side comes down to how much space you take and how long you take it for.
Volume stored
The main driver, and the reason we survey. Storage is priced on the space your belongings actually occupy, so a decluttering exercise before the move genuinely lowers the bill rather than just feeling virtuous.
Duration
Short term is charged by the week, long term by the month at a lower effective rate. The crossover is usually around the two to three month mark, and we will point it out rather than leaving you on the more expensive footing.
Access during storage
Storage that is sealed and untouched costs less than storage you need to dip into regularly. If you expect to retrieve items during the period, say so upfront and we will price and pack for that.
Packing
Whether you pack, we pack the fragile items, or we pack the whole house. Anything going into storage for months benefits from being packed properly, so this matters more here than on a straight move.
Distance at both ends
Collection and redelivery are two removals jobs. Both are affected by the usual things: floor level, stair access, parking, and how far the van sits from the door.
Redelivery timing
A redelivery booked with a few working days notice is straightforward. Same week requests at a month end are harder to staff, so give us an approximate date early even if it later moves.
We will tell you which of these is driving your number. In most cases the single biggest saving available is reducing what goes in, so it is worth doing the decluttering before the survey rather than after the quote.

Preparing your belongings for storage
Things that go into storage well come out of storage well. If we are packing for you this is handled, but if you are packing yourself it is worth ten minutes reading this first. Our packing service covers materials and technique in more detail.
Clean and dry everything first
Anything going into storage damp will not improve while it is in there. Wipe down furniture, dry white goods thoroughly and make sure nothing goes in with moisture trapped inside it.
Do not use bin bags
They tear, they sweat, they crush, and they look exactly like rubbish to anyone moving them. Use proper boxes. It is the single most common mistake people make and the one that causes the most avoidable damage.
Protect mattresses and upholstery
Mattress covers and furniture covers rather than a sheet thrown over. Upholstery picks up dust and odour over months, and a cover is a couple of pounds against replacing a sofa.
Drain and dry appliances
Washing machines, dishwashers and fridges need draining and airing before they go in, and fridge doors should be left ajar. A sealed fridge with residual moisture in it for six months is not a fridge you will want back.
Box electronics properly
Original packaging if you still have it, otherwise a well padded box. Remove batteries from anything that takes them, because a leaking battery over a long period will ruin whatever it is sitting in.
Dismantle what comes apart
Beds, tables and flat pack take a fraction of the space dismantled, and storage is priced on space. Keep fixings bagged and taped to the item they belong to.
Label for retrieval, not just for rooms
On a normal move you label by destination room. For storage, label by contents as well, because in eight months you will want to find the winter coats without opening fourteen boxes.
Keep an accessible box
If there is any chance you will need something during the storage period, tell us and we will load it last so it sits at the front. Trying to reach a box at the back of a sealed container is not a five minute job.
